WhereIsMyTransport sets out to resolve the problem of inadequate public transport services in South Africa.
Using a combination of business and technology skills, a solution was developed to meet public transport challenges in South Africa. The WhereIsMyTansport platform provides the basis for a modern and fully-integrated transportation infrastructure system, which offers public transport companies:
- Tracking and scheduling control over their transport vehicles;
- Detailed reporting facilities; and
- Live monitoring and notification services of vehicles, drivers, routes and passengers.
The project is designed in conjunction with Golden Arrow Bus Services and Sibanye, two of the largest local bus public transport companies, to improve transport services within the public transport industry.
This first-of-a-kind service in South Africa will not only improve routing and scheduling capabilities of the transport companies, but also use the data gathered by the system to provide a service to the passenger.
Using the bus stop co-ordinates and street post codes gathered, in conjunction with the routes plotted by the transport companies, customers can now request the location and arrival time of their buses via a simple SMS or by utilising a graphical interface.
Passengers can also retrieve more detailed information, such as the next bus at their stop, en route to a destination of their choice. They will then have the information returned to them via SMS. This system can be likened to the systems in used in New Zealand and Spain, however, it differs in design these by not being a “push system” which feeds the commuter predefined information on electronic notice boards. The “WhereIsMyBus” system is a “pull service”, which provides specific information pertinent to the customer and only upon request.
The system is has already been piloted on two bus services within South Africa for a three month duration and was highly successful and moving the project from proof-of-concept stage to fully operational. The applications of the system are plentiful, including the ability to integrate it with railways and taxis; utilising it for trip planning which would be beneficial for tourists; and creating a fully integrated urban transport mix for which passengers can pull schedules, thus meshing and connecting all modes, and thereby enabling the commuter to plan the fastest, easiest or cheapest means of getting from their current location to their desired destination.
