With the first month of 2012 already under our collective belt, we caught up with SAFIPA-supported projects to find out what 2012 has in store for them.  In this article we share developments within FBSA, Reed House Systems, CampusNet, JamiiX, WhereisMyTransport and LiftclubSA.

First Business South Africa (FBSA) has already had some extremely heartening developments within their initiative.  Tim White, the founder of FBSA says, “2012 might just be the year that we have all been waiting for!  Finally our facility has its power and so we are able to take the next important steps.”

Tim refers to the Bloekombos Uluntu Plaza, which is FBSA’s living lab business incubator, and which also happens to be an African first!  The project involves the establishment of a business training centre, or incubator, at which previously unemployed learner-workers are placed in retail based micro-enterprises, backed by a fully integrated supply chain and business services platform, whilst engaging in skills programmes and learnerships to embed the required knowledge.  The Plaza is an initiative of City of Cape Town Local Areas human and Economic Development department (LAED). The business incubator provides an unprecedented opportunity for suppliers and manufacturers to participate actively in the local economic development of South Africa.

During the latter part of 2011, implementation of the project was hampered by delays in the electrification of the plaza.  Whilst having to endure a number of frustrating months until power was finally delivered to the plaza, Tim can now enthusiastically report that, “Our immediate aim is to attract suppliers and manufacturers to participate in the supply chain processes.”

Smart devices, mobile apps, service delivery channels and cloud computing: how to choose!

A full house for Module 4 of the ICT and Mobile Business Building programme

SAFIPA’s Thiru Swettenham reports that whilst most of SAFIPA’s funding has been allocated to supporting projects which are developing innovative end user applications, one of the key focuses of the SAFIPA programme is to build a facilitating environment for ICT4D.  This is done by supporting human capacity building and network creation.

In particular,  SAFIPA seeks to support emerging and existing entrepreneurs through the ICT and Mobile Business Building programme.  If numbers are anything to go by, the programme is clearly a success with over 250 participants having taken part in the programme over four of the modules that have been presented in the past five months.  The programme, which consists of a total of five modules, has included participants from research institutions, public and private enterprises, NGOs and regional government departments.   Dr Dlodlo of the CSIR, who attended the workshop, coined a phrase that aptly described the programme as ‘mobile-made-easy’.

The fourth module on Mobile Platforms was hosted in early March, and included a wide range of topics, such as:  aspects of the mobile user interface, service delivery channels, value propositions for using mobile, highlighting differences between low-end and smart devices and the type of channels available, programming with JAVA, network service provider spectrum, and Wireless Application Service Providers.

The technical sessions on the selection of mobile platforms stressed the need for appropriate market scanning, critically segmenting one’s market and ensuring the correct choice of device before embarking on mobile application development.  Five case studies were presented, ranging from complete business solutions for small businesses; the use of mobile for HIV awareness amongst youth; different smart devices and their advantages or disadvantages for applications; the use of cloud computing and its advantages for the emerging mobile developer; and the use of crowd-sourcing for collaborative social innovation via a web based gaming and networking platform.   With such an array of material, it is unsurprising that participants gained immense value from the workshop.

Sociotech: Made in South Africa

Winner of the ‘Best Exhibitor’ award at IST-Africa in May 2010, Kerryn spoke to Retha de la Harpe from Sociotech, to find out more about the project.

What is Sociotech?
The Sociotech: Made in South Africa project looks at sociotechnological methods and education for the local software industry in order to contribute to social-economic development. In particular the project looks at the collaborative creation of innovative ICT solutions to assist care-givers and others who are involved in home-based healthcare services.

It is important to note that the Sociotech project has not developed a solution as such given that one of the main objectives of the project is to work concurrently with both software developers and home-based healthcare providers. Together these two groups will arrive at the most appropriate solution through discussion, collaboration and thorough understanding of the challenges experienced within the home-based healthcare environment.

What challenge does Sociotech meet?

Home-based healthcare programmes are currently run by NGOs and are difficult to manage given financial and personnel constraints. All administration and reporting related to the work is largely manual, which causes a serious drain on time. The challenge is to develop information technology resources in order to ensure that caregivers and other associated stakeholders have more time available to undertake their primary goal, which is to take care of their patients. From the perspective of the patients, many of them are ill informed about their illnesses and this is a direct result of caregivers – who most often work without any financial reward – not having the capacity to explain and inform patients about their conditions. Added to this is the fact that NGOs have to rely on funding from other organsations and subsequently a great deal of time is spent on finding funding for this type of healthcare.

Home-based healthcare differs slightly from region to region. For example, in the Western Cape’s peri-urban areas, the healthcare
providers have a formalised system where the health care of patients is evaluated, a care plan is provided, and then followed up with visits to the patients. However, in the Eastern Cape, home-based healthcare (more…)
