Thiru Naidoo-Swettenham, the South African Programme Coordinator on the SAFIPA team, recently undertook a knowledge exchange trip to Finland with the intention of attending the infoDev-hosted 4th Global Forum 2011 conference; maximising networking opportunities; and learning from local Finnish innovators.  It was a jam-packed trip, which included meetings at Aalto University and Etnoteam, the institutions which have hosted the Knowledge Exchange Finland programme for post-graduate South African students.  Meetings with innovation actors in Espoo, Hameeenlinna and Tampere were organised in order to gain insight into the different mechanisms and organisations which are involved in ICT incubation and entrepreneurship in Finland.

The infoDev 4th Global Forum 2011

Thiru, accompanied by Kristiina Lähde, attended the full six days of the conference as a participant both in the pre-conference session entitled, Incubation Manager Training and in the forum itself.    There was no formal presentation by the SAFIPA team, however, the Nokia Mobile Maths project that the programme supports, was highlighted during the conference’s opening address made by the Minister of Foreign Trade and Development.

The main conference was  in Helsinki from the 30th May to the 3rd June with a chock-filled programme that included thirteen different activities, some of which were open to all participants, whilst others were closed meetings.  In total, there were 588 delegates from 85 countries.   On day two, the conference was divided into three separate tracks, which covered mobile, agribusiness and clean technology. Other sessions presented in the first and third days were Building industry Competitiveness through Effective Innovation; Innovation SMEs in the Global Market Space; Technology Financing and Opportunities; and Incubating Innovation through networks.

Having participants and presenters from international organisations in Africa, Asia, South and North America, the Middle East,  Europe and Australia, supported a dynamic platform for engagement and the sharing of experiences.  Thiru says of her discussions with different, people:  “I found a lot of similar experiences, challenges and initiatives that are being undertaken, and I gained a keen insight into some of the activities that South Africans could pursue.”

SAFIPA’s innovative approach to capacity building reaps rich rewards

Brainstorming during the Leading Expert Organisations workshop.

The component of institutional capacity development has included such activities as value-added instruction, the training of trainers, activities with multiplier effects, and networking opportunities.   The SAFIPA team has approached the goal of capacity building with both creativity and an aptitude for understanding what makes skills-transfer successful.

As such, over the duration of the SAFIPA programme, a number of exciting initiatives and activities have been made available to both project partners and stakeholders concerned with developing and implementing innovative ICT solutions for local communities.  These activities have ranged from a personal mentorship engagement programme, to knowledge exchange trips to Finland for a group of South Africans, with the intention of enabling the sharing and transfer of knowledge; to workshops with Finnish knowledge experts, and train-the-trainer sessions utilising inventive methodologies designed to unlock people and organisational potential.

Mentorship engagement nurtures innovative solutions for a local ICT incubator

During 2009, Leonie Greyling, who at the time was the newly appointed CEO to Softstart BTI, took part in a SAFIPA mentoring engagement programme.  This was an intensive, one-on-one programme with SAFIPA’s Kristiina Lähde that lasted for a full year. Leonie says, “The relationship with Kristiina Lähde was established with the intention of her providing me with support in my new role as CEO of the Incubator.”   Softstart BTI is an ICT business and technology incubator that supports early-stage businesses, focussing in particular on the incubation of young IT graduates, professionals and previously disadvantaged groups.  The focus is on encouraging entrepreneurship amongst these groups.  As a function of her new appointment, Leonie was required to look at the issues of sustainability and relevance for the incubator.  Meeting every month to six-weeks for a two-hour discussion session, Kristiina guided Leonie through an analysis of these issues, by highlighting Finnish incubators with similar objectives, and exploring the various sustainability measures and best-practices that these entities employ.

Local education projects show commitment to working together to strengthen their goals

While in Finland, a number of the participants on the SAFIPA Knowledge Exchange Trip came to the realisation that the way in which people in Finland interact, share information and collaborate was a wake-up call which motivated them to embark on a path of discovery, cooperation, integration and innovation.  They strongly feel that these activities are capable of moving education in South Africa in a positive new direction.

Keith Maree  from CampusNet, Ron Beyers of Young Engineers and Scientists of Africa, Leon van der Merwe from LearnScapes, JanHendrik Oosthuizen from Trydian Interactive and Dave Lockwood who heads up the Naledi 3D Factory, have recently come together to found the South African Alliance for ICT and Development Education Cluster.

Inspiration from Finnish innovation practices

Based on the Finnish approach to innovation, collaboration and discovery, the South African Alliance for ICT and Development Education Cluster, established in 2010, offers a new way to tackle the education challenges facing South Africa, through dialogue and project collaboration.

Education, training and skills development at all levels of society remain high on the national agenda and few would disagree that there is a willingness to identify more efficient and accessible ways to meet this need and to promote a broader culture of learning, skills development and responsible citizens. Education is a powerful way to address poverty alleviation.  Many education projects, however, explore new approaches and technologies in isolation, leading to one major difficulty – that of sustainable replication.

Educational Cluster goals

The Educational Cluster initiative is an innovative response, one that is based on collaboration and “new media” to link together interested stakeholders from Government departments and educational agencies, academic institutions, FET colleges, content developers, content providers, infrastructure providers, donor organisations, non-profit organisations, regional business as well as local community leaders. Thus, through the Educational Cluster, partners can collectively engage and collaborate in new ways that can nurture improved skills development in the country. (more…)

The Knowledge Exchange Finland

Whilst Spring was still a mere frosty whisper on Finland’s winter landscape, a spirited group of South Africans fresh from an African summer made their way to Helsinki on a SAFIPA-sponsored knowledge exchange programme.

Their aim?  To learn, share and explore knowledge around a diverse range of sectors where technological innovation has been harnessed to serve development.

After a rigorous application procedure during which 12 participants were selected from over 85 applications, the group was to spend a total of 10 intensive days, from 10th to 17th April coming to understand Finland’s Open Innovation.  Participants were split into two groups, namely eLearning and eHealth, with five people within the eHealth group and seven in eLearning.  The participants were invited to meet with stakeholders from within industry and universities in order to find collaboration opportunities for their own initiatives.  At times both groups were together, but for the bulk of the time the two groups met separately with stakeholders specific to their environments.  Not only were there formal meetings and presentations, but participants were also given the opportunity to meet informally so that relationships could be built that will last well into the future.

Participant Keith Maree of CampusNet, one of the participants selected for the 2010 Knowledge Exchange programme, has offered to share his insights and experiences with us in his diary below.  Keith was a member of the eLearning group.

DAY ONE. Today we meet with members of Abo Akademi University in Turku and learn about the LeMill project, which is a web community of 11,008 teachers and other learning content creators.  At the moment LeMill has 9,938 reusable learning content resources.  This is an amazing community of people and resources.

DAY TWO. We’re introduced to an exciting initiative called the Innohub, which gathers “inno” teams consisting of business, technology and industrial design people.  These teams are encouraged to innovate ideas through proof of concept, to patents, to spin offs with interfaces to funders, venture capital organisations and angel investors.
