Part 4 “This is what we’re doing”: SAFIPA projects on building and information society

The key issues in the fourth parallel session, were to look closely at the linkages with Government and the private sector, sustainability and further development, opportunities for replication and wider adoption within South Africa and in other countries, and the funding of future initiatives. The Living Labs South Africa, Meraka Code Sprints and Kujali Sociotech shared their experiences.

THE ECO-SYSTEM OF THE LIVING LABS SOUTHERN AFRICA NETWORK

Professor Marlien Herselman from the CSIR Meraka Institute discusses Living Labs in Southern Africa initiative which is an embodiment of the innovation system where all sectors engage in the innovation process.

“The concept of a Living Lab is that it incorporates different stakeholders such as users, innovators, and institutions, who submit and support ideas as applied to a specific value chain. They collaborate to create, prototype and use new products and processes.  In the African context, what works well is a lab environment that caters for a user-driver approach. Successful developments can then be replicated to improve living standards more broadly.

A standing ovation for SAFIPA and awards for outstanding projects

The kickoff plenary session of the SAFIPA 2011 Conference

Today was the first day of the SAFIPA 2011 two-day conference, which is the third, and last conference that will be hosted by SAFIPA as the programme draws to a close next month.

The first day has been filled with thought-provoking plenary sessions, interesting and inspiring parallel sessions and an info-gathering ‘market place’ where SAFIPA-supported projects could showcase their projects and activities in an up-close-and-personal environment.

The day kicked off with a plenary session that included a joint welcome from Mr Isaac Maredi, Director:  Information and Communication Technology within the Department of Science and Technology and Dr Jyrki Pulkkinen, Senior Advisor, Information Society & Science Technology and Innovation for Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.   The welcome was followed by a keynote address by Dr Derek Keats, of dkeats Innovation, and former Deputy Vice Chancellor of Knowledge Information Management at University of Witwatersrand.  His address entitled “Emerging Future Trends in Information and Communications Technologies” provided a perfect backdrop to the rest of the day consisting, as it did, of asking provoking questions and highlighting themes around the definition, measurement and nurturing of innovation and innovators.

The two parallel sessions today included “Technology Commercialisation” during which time projects WhereIsMyTransport, JamiiX and the Meraka Tech Transfer projects outlined their contexts, activities, challenges and strengths.  The second session was on “Improving Service Delivery for Rural Development” at which time ESTIMA Teleweaver, Municipality in a Box, and Naledi3d shared how local communities can be empowered through the innovative use of ICTs.

Socio-Tech’s Kujali harnesses mobile innovation to support home-based healthcare providers

Since last talking to the SAFIPA editorial team, the Socio-Tech: Made in South Africa project has made great strides towards reaching its objectives.  Recently, a mobile application has been created that is one of a group of digital applications, which have been developed following the applied research process that the project utilises.

Introducing Kujali – ‘to care’

Kujali, which is a subset of the greater SocioTech project, focuses on research and the practical implementation of solutions to meet the problems as identified through the research. Kujali, which is a Swahili word that means ‘to care’ currently includes development of a mobile application as one of its key areas of work.

In general, Kujali’s objectives are to support and improve home-based healthcare in both rural and economically-disadvantaged communities in South Africa, by gaining a deeper understanding of the complex nature of the problems that are faced both by the caregivers in home-based healthcare and the communities themselves.  It is thus necessary to identify at the grassroots, the challenges experienced by caregivers – many of these not previously articulated – and to not only find solutions that directly meet these challenges but to ensure that the solutions are relevant to, and workable within, the care giver’s daily practices.

When Retha de la Harpe, the project leader at Socio-Tech, originally spoke to the SAFIPA editorial team just over six months ago, she described the in-depth research process that was utilised to identify problems and challenges.  Working with community members, research specialists, health informatics post-graduate students from CPUT and NNMU, and technology developers and designers, the process was intensely collaborative and consultative.  Retha now says, “We have obtained a good understanding of the care givers’ needs, but since we use a co-design approach we are continuing with the interaction with the users.  We are currently testing the different applications in practice to establish if it now works as expected.”
